What Is Net Metering?
Net metering is a billing arrangement that allows your solar system to feed unused electricity back into the grid. The discom (DHBVN or UHBVN in Gurgaon) installs a bi-directional meter that measures both the electricity you consume from the grid and the electricity you export to it.
At the end of each billing cycle, you only pay for the net difference. If you export more than you consume, the surplus rolls over as credits.
How Net Metering Works in Gurgaon
- Your solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours
- You consume what you need in real time
- Surplus electricity flows into the DHBVN grid — your meter runs "backwards"
- At night, you draw from the grid
- At the end of the month, DHBVN calculates the net units consumed
- You only pay for the net units at your applicable tariff rate
What Rate Does DHBVN Pay for Exported Solar?
Under Haryana's current net metering policy, exported units are credited at the Average Power Purchase Cost (APPC), which is lower than the retail tariff you pay. However, the savings from self-consumption (avoiding the retail rate) are far more valuable than export credits.
This is why system sizing matters — a well-sized system maximises self-consumption rather than over-producing for grid export.
How to Get a Net Meter in Gurgaon
- Install a solar system through an empanelled vendor (like Voltmen Solar)
- We submit the net metering application to DHBVN on your behalf
- DHBVN conducts a technical inspection of the installation
- A bi-directional net meter is installed (typically 2–4 weeks after inspection)
- Your solar system is commissioned and you start earning credits
Common Net Metering Questions
Can I get net metering for an apartment?
Yes, if the apartment has a separate electricity connection and the rooftop space is allocated to you. Housing societies can also opt for group net metering.
Is there a system size limit for net metering in Haryana?
Net metering is available for systems up to the sanctioned load of your connection. Most residential connections allow 3–10 kW.
How long does it take?
DHBVN typically takes 30–60 days from application to net meter installation.
